Please join us for a webinar to discuss how you can get involved with WIA’s registered apprenticeship program known as TIRAP – The Telecommunications Industry Registered Apprenticeship Program. This webinar will share all you need to know about how to get involved, including how to register as a TIRAP participating employer.

As a recognized Industry Intermediary by the US Department of Labor, WIA is your advocate and partner. We provide industry and occupation specific expertise, help coordinate partner responsibilities, and assist with the administrative details of the program. Our goal is to speed up your adoption of apprenticeship, reduce your investment of time and resources, and ensure training meets your needs for a qualified workforce.

 

A Partnership that Works: Pre-Apprenticeship Training

The webinar also features Corning offering a comprehensive overview of their Fiber IQ/Corning Fiber Broadband Technician course. This five-day entry level course is designed for people with little to no experience in the field of fiber handling and splicing. The course covers a spectrum of essential skills including network design, splicing, connectorization, field construction for cable deployment, and system turn-up are taught with extensive hands-on practice, including a full system build with testing and trouble shooting. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be well equipped for entry level roles with carriers, construction firms, and broadband providers. Aligned with the WIA/TIRAP Fiber Optic Technician apprenticeship, this course not only imparts valuable skills but also satisfies the related training instruction for apprenticeship requirements.

Deb Bennett
Vice President of Apprenticeship - Telecommunications Industry Registered Apprenticeship Program (TIRAP), Wireless Infrastructure Association (WIA)

Training tomorrow’s leaders in the infrastructure workforce is Deb Bennett’s specific challenge and inspiration. In her current role with WIA, she not only serves as the Director of Apprenticeship for TIRAP (Telecommunications Industry Registered Apprenticeship Program), she also consults on education/workforce development issues, and advises WWLF (Women’s Wireless Leadership Forum).

Elizabeth Lentz
Fiber IQ Program Manager, Corning Optical Communications

Elizabeth has been a member of the Corning’s Educational Programs Team for the past 4 years.  She is responsible for developing an industry focused fiber optic training strategy intended to provide an entry level pathway into the growing fiber broadband industry.  Through her work, she has a passion to educate minorities, veterans, and women on opportunities in the fiber industry.

In addition to her role at Corning, she volunteers with the Fiber Broadband Association, Dottie Rose Foundation, Corning’s Choices Program, and SkillsUSA to broaden STEM awareness to the next generation of people entering the workforce.  Elizabeth holds a bachelor’s in science technology education and a master’s in online technology and instructional design.

Maya Norvel
Community Affairs Project Manager, Corning Optical Communications

Maya has been a community affairs, project manager with Corning Incorporated for 2.5 years. She is responsible for supporting global community affairs efforts with a focus on DEI and workforce development. She develops cross-functional teams, driving results, in support of multiple community initiatives. Most recently, Maya was the Communications and Community Engagement Manager with Charlotte Area Fund. She has over fifteen years of community outreach and engagement experience. Maya holds a bachelor’s in journalism and communications from Hampton University and currently serves on the Charlotte Digital Inclusion Alliance as well as The NC Broadband Workforce Planning Advisory Committee.

Rachael Hill
Project Manager of Apprenticeship, Wireless Infrastructure Association (WIA)
Rachael Hill serves as WIA's Project Manager of Apprenticeship, working to expand and improve upon the Telecommunications Industry Registered Apprenticeship Program (TIRAP) offerings. She has been contributing to the growth of TIRAP, delivering subject matter expertise and technical assistance to Employer Sponsors of apprenticeship.
